Redfoot Tortoise Hatchling Care Tutorial

March 6, 2013 by Ernie J 1 Comment

Redfoot tortoise hatchling care, and by this I mean up to an age of 3-4 months, isn’t consistent across the web.

My wife and I created a basic tutorial on what you should be doing on an every other day basis for your new Redfoot(s).

This video assumes you already have the proper enclosure or habitat for your hatchling setup and know what you should be feeding them – the 60% fruit – 40% greens diet at this age.   No low fat cat food until they’re 6 months old.

Feel free to leave any comments along with any other ideas on videos you’d like to see on these wonderful torts.

Galapagos Tortoises thriving on remote island

February 9, 2013 by Ernie J

Since the Redfoot Tortoise and the Galop are ancient relatives, I found this article on Galops coming back on a remote island a real happy one to read.

Lonesome George Is Dead, Long Live The Giant Galapagos Tortoise!
Worldcrunch
PUERTO BAQUERIZO MORENO – The famous giant tortoise of the Galapagos is saved! At least for now… It was thought that the ancient Galapagos tortoise endemic to these South American islands had gone extinct with last year’s death of Lonesome …

Lonesome George was the last of the Pinta Island Galops and it was a sad day when I heard he passed away last year.  There’s a PBS special on him from 2006 that covers the history of the Galops and how they were decimated by Whaling ships in the 1700’s and 1800’s.

If you can find on your local PBS station it’s worth watching.

Pre-Valentines Day Romance For Tortoises

February 8, 2013 by Ernie J

I saw this yesterday and had a good laugh about it.

The London Zoo has a 70-year-old giant tortoise named Dirk. He even has three much younger tortoise lady friends. Their species is endangered, so it’s probably best for everyone, particularly Dirk, if they get to mating. To set ……More at World-Class Pianist Brought in to Romance Tortoises – Geekosystem

It’s obviously done as a publicity stunt for the London zoo, since the reptile people there have to know the hearing capability of any Tortoise, even a Galop, is extremely limited.

The pianist could play all day and all night and it wouldn’t make one bit of difference to Dirk or the female Galop.  🙂
